Argiculture in Nickerie

Nickerie is a district of Suriname where rice is most cultivated, because the ground is fertile for agriculture and it lays in the coastal plain. The immigrants of Indië and Indonesia brought their culture here and generation to generation rice cultivating is done in Nickerie, Suriname. Rice is the main agriculture product of Nickerie and most of the population are cultivating it. They have their own ground  and mostly they hire grounds to cultivate.

The last 5 – 10 years now the farmers are complaining about the price. They don’t have one price, but different  prices, which create a lot of problems, such as debts, no profit, bankrupt etc.Their opinion is that the Government  must come with a good price, so that they can pay their debts and have a income for their family. These farmers don’t have any other income, so they are depending on it.

All these problems create a doubt by the new generation. They don’t want to be a farmer also. They rather choose another profession, because they see the  problems their parents are going through.

We don’t have a Agriculture School in Suriname. They are forced tochoose another profession. If there was a Agriculture School, it would help those student to get interested in Agriculture.

One of the problems with which farmers are dealing with is no money management, which leads to great debts and bankrupt. To solve this problem is that the Government can educate the farmers in money management, so they can invest their profit in a good way. They can also cultivate vegetables, ducks, chickens and sheeps which they can sell and gain an income.

For a good crop farmers have to help themselves by forming a farmers group and ask stakes from every farmers each crop, so they can use the stakes in situation in which the Government can’t help them at that moment. They can also take lessons in good communications, which is a big problems for them. Also Adron with  LVV ( Ministery of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries) can help the farmers educate themselves in cultivating in a better way. So they have to work together for a better result.

The Government can subsidize the farmers by importing machineries that use less petrol, machineries, fertilizer and chemicals that is duty-free. Also the Government has to lower the loan intrest rate of the banks, so that both farmers and bankinstitutions won’t have problems doing their works.

Title of the Project: Education in Agriculture

Group Members: Roshni Bhagirathi, Soenila Kisoensingh, Gracella Amatanom, Xenia Oemraw.

Introduction:

Nickerie is a district of Suriname where rice is the most agriculture product that is plant. We use rice as a main local product and we also export it. A great deal of the old generation is planting rice and we notice that the new generation is not interested more, because of the problems the farmers are facing with.

So we decided to help students of the Secundary School to motive them in Agriculture through education.

We tried to make the students write an essay obout the farmers and agriculture, the problems they are going through. We asked them to give their opinions and come with possible solutions.

We will try to motive them in ict use as De Bono hats, popplet,Toondoo, 6-3-5 sketch and Affinity Mapping to make it more interesting for them, because every youth now has a mobile and they know to use it. So we want to acknowledge them through the tools we have learnt.

Background and Research:

According the farmers the price of rice is too low. They don’t have profits, especially the small farmers. They try to earn a living by cultivating rice, through taking credit form the bank , which they can’t pay back. Which leads to debts, bankrupt etc.

We have interviewed small farmers and they are complaining that the government doesn’t subsidize on fertilizer, machineries, like our neighbour country Guyana.

Prototype:

We will let the students come with their ideas to create an application for the farmers, so that they can help the farmers for garderning information about the best way to do farmacing and money management.  And ask the government to subsidize chemicals, fertilizers and accelerate import duty-free machineries that use less petrol.

Collaboration between Adron and LVV ,Import duty-free macheries.

Feedback and Redesign:

How we used the Debono Hats:

We used it in a classroom by separating the students in six groups and give each group a colored hat. First we explained the students the meaning of the hats. Then we gave them the subject (Education in Agriculture) so that they can give their opinion by using the hats.

Action Plan:

Introducing a Secondary Agriculture School for students who are drop-outs and who have intrest in studying Agriculture. We want to start with a minimum of 10 students in the first year. Teachers and specialists of LVV and Adron, who have the skills to teach those students. In the NATIN building we have a location for ict use and also a lab. ADRON also has a good lab, where they do their research. So the costs of a building and lab can save a lot of money for the Government. In Paramaribo we have a SecondaryAgriculture School, so it will be easier to start with one here in Nickerie. We can also get learning tools from the Ministry of Education.

Testing and Improve:

We took our product to an expert who says that it could be a good product if the Government could create good perspectives for those students in Nickerie who could have a great future after a few years.

We interviewed an Agriculture specialist and we got to know that there are advantages and disadvantages. To motive then we have to organize an information or open day and do pre-registrations.

The suggestions that were giving were that there must be an diffentiation in those studies, like cultivating flowers, fruits, vegetables and aquaculture.

Conclusion and Future work:

It took a lot of effort to gather information. We did a lot of brainstorming and interviews. We want to expand this future work, so that those students  can get interested in Agriculture and make Nickerie a prosper Agriculture District.
